Multi-level decks

Several lower levels often beat one high deck in a windy town. We design multi-level decks that follow the ground and keep you out of the gusts.

Quick answer

A multi-level deck uses two or more platforms at different heights, joined by steps. In exposed gardens, lower levels catch less wind and can tuck into shelter. Raised parts need extra bracing. Anything more than 30cm above the ground usually needs planning permission, and drops over 600mm need guarding.

Lower is calmer

Wind speed increases with height. A deck raised a metre off the ground in an open garden can feel far breezier than one close to the lawn. That's why, in Hartlepool, we often design two or three lower levels instead of one high deck, with the main seating area tucked against the house.

Following the ground

Gardens in Wynyard Woods and High Throston often slope gently. Levels that step down with the ground keep each deck low, need less guarding and use fewer steps.

Bracing and strength

Where any level is raised, we add diagonal bracing between posts, deeper beams and secure connections to the house or a freestanding frame. Every post sits on a concrete pad. Balustrades are bolted through to the frame.

Planning and guarding

Decking is usually permitted development if no part is more than 30cm above the ground. Higher levels generally need planning permission. Any drop over 600mm needs guarding to Building Regulations guidance.

Questions answered

Do raised decks need extra bracing in wind?

Yes. We brace posts diagonally and use stronger connections on raised decks, especially on exposed sites.

Do I need planning permission for a raised deck?

Usually, if any part is more than 30cm above the ground. We'll measure at the visit and explain what's needed.
