Glass for shelter and views
Toughened glass balustrades keep views of the sea or fields open while blocking some wind. On exposed decks we use heavier fixings and posts suited to the wind load.
Slatted screens
A solid wall can create swirling gusts on its sheltered side. A slatted screen with gaps filters the wind, slowing it down instead. We build slatted screens in hardwood or composite, fixed to strong posts that are bolted into the deck frame. They also give privacy.
Aluminium and timber
Powder-coated aluminium balustrades are strong, slim and almost maintenance-free. Timber and composite balustrades suit lower decks and traditional houses.
Steps
Wide steps with consistent risers and grippy treads. On raised decks we add handrails, and contrasting nosings make each step easy to see on dull days.
Lighting
Low-voltage LEDs in steps, posts and screens. We use sealed fittings suitable for the weather, with cables run inside the frame. A qualified electrician fits any new outdoor socket.
Questions answered
Can glass balustrades act as a windbreak?
Yes, to a degree. Glass blocks wind while keeping the view. For real shelter on very exposed sites, a slatted screen often works better.
How strong are the posts?
Balustrade and screen posts are bolted through into the deck frame, not just the boards, so they stay solid in high winds.
