Common problems we see
Boards that have lifted or loosened after storms, rusted screws, split softwood, a frame that sways on a raised section, or balustrades that move when you lean on them. Often the cause is a light frame with no bracing, fixings that weren't up to the job, or timber left sitting in damp.
Re-board or rebuild
If the joists and posts are sound, we can fit new boards with new fixings, adding joists or noggins for stiffness. If the frame is weak or rotten, we take everything out and rebuild with deeper joists, bracing and posts on concrete pads.
Add shelter while you're at it
A replacement is a good time to add a screen or move the seating area into shelter. Many people find they use the new deck far more simply because it's out of the wind.
Clearing away
We remove the old deck, frame and fixings, take it all away and prepare the ground before building.
Questions answered
Can storm-damaged boards be replaced?
If the frame is sound, yes. If boards lifted because the frame or fixings failed, we'd fix the cause rather than just the boards.
Do you check the frame when replacing?
Always. We lift boards at the visit to inspect joists, posts and fixings before recommending re-boarding or a rebuild.
